Lots of activities and Golf Tournament news ...A sweet little girl undergoing chemotherapy for a brain tumor had a wish we helped make come true. She wanted a doll house! Thank you to Brittany, child life specialist , for helping me pick out the right doll house for our little lady, and delivering it right to the families door. (Wouldn’t fit in my little car!) Guess who built the doll house? ME. That is a miracle in itself. Sometimes I surprise myself. When I ordered it I had NO idea it would come in a million parts, all wood, with nails. Never in my life have I built ANYTHING. I wouldn’t have made it through the construction without the help and support of my collegue, Michelle. Thank you Michelle. Every day I wonder what I would do without you! When our little lady came in for her therapy, she and her mom came into my office to view the “surprise”… a beautiful 4 foot high Victorian doll house, complete with wooden furniture, and a family. Our patient was not in a very good mood, as her “port” had just been accessed to start her chemo. Nevertheless, you could tell she was excited about her doll house. She reminded me a lot of Shannon. The hospital had a very special guest recently. Our foundation arranged for Bearemy the Build A Bear Workshop mascot to vist the kids on 5C and 7H. He brought our friend Courtney with him, along with thirty animals and a variety of outfits. The kids loved being able to pick out what they wanted. Courtney did a wonderful job interacting with the children. I could tell it was a touching experience for Courtney and Bearemy. Some of the kids were a little tentative at first. After all, Bearemy is a very BIG bear! Most of the kids were excited, along with their parents, the doctors, and nurses. It is always a lot of fun when Bearemy visits. Thank you Build A Bear Workshop at Carousel Center for your continued support of our mission in memory of Shannon. By the way, for any of our patient’s families reading this … our next party in the Build A Bear Workshop in coming up on Sunday May 3rd , 930 -1100 am. The sign up sheet will be in 5C and 7H. We look forward to spending time having fun with all of you. If you’ve been before, please come again. We are hoping to meet some new families too. It is always a sad day at work when we have to meet a new family whose child has just been diagnosed with cancer. Emotion is high for the families, and the dedicated staff who help take care of them. My family remembers all too well the shock , grief, anger, etc., all the emotions that become a part of your daily living from that day forward. Our hospital takes care of patients from all over New York State, some traveling a large distance to receive treatment for their child. One parent can stay with the child during any hospital admission. Sometimes a place is needed for the other parent to stay, or for the entire family when treatment can be accomplished in the outpatient center(5C). This is when we rely on The Ronald McDonald House of CNY to accommodate our families overnight for extended stays. Our foundation recently agreed to pay for a families 6 week stay at the Ronald McDonald House. A beautiful teenage girl had just been diagnosed with cancer. The family had a long drive back home, it was not possible for the dad to commute between the home and hospital. We were very happy to help make this easier for them. None of this would be possible without the funds we raise at the annual Shannon Froio Foundation Golf Tournament. This years tournament is going to be held at the Links, Erie Village , in East Syracuse, as in years past. Please put Thursday, August 6th on your calendar. Our Events page will be updated SOON with all the information. The number to call for information and questions is the same as listed. We hope to have more golfers and hole sponsors this year. There is also a silent auction and dinner. We always have fun and like to include any non-golfers in the activities too. As a non-golfer, I always have a great time. Please join us this year!!!!! |
